Snow Days at Legacy Acres: Igloos, Sleds and Winter S’mores

Family members beside their decorated snow igloo in January 2026

Winter here isn’t just something we have to get through. Some days, it’s the main attraction.

Our children and grandchildren love sledding at Legacy Acres, and sometimes their friends join us. We’ve had sledding parties, bonfires, winter s’mores, and an igloo that deserved some serious recognition. On January 11, 2026, we got photographs of the whole snowy scene, and I’m glad we did.

The igloo crew

The igloo was a family project spearheaded by my son and his children. It wasn’t just a mound of snow with a hole poked through it. They built a proper archway and spent time turning the snow into a place everyone could gather around and admire.

The children were understandably proud of it. I think the adults were, too.

And then there were the sledding trails. We have woods and hills, which in winter can turn a regular afternoon into a series of trips up and down the snow. The climbing back up is excellent evidence that childhood energy operates by rules the rest of us don’t understand.

The good kind of cold

A bonfire and s’mores are hard to beat after an afternoon outdoors. Mittens get damp. Boots collect snow. Someone always seems to want one more run just as everybody else decides they’re cold.

We keep winter gatherings supervised and adjust plans for the weather, trail conditions, and everyone’s ages. Fun is better when we all get home safe.

There’s an extra layer to all of this for me. Our grandchildren are the seventh generation of the family connected to this land. Their earlier relatives raised dairy cows, grew potatoes, and worked timber and gravel. This generation is adding igloos, sled tracks, and sticky marshmallow fingers to the family history.

I think my Nana would have liked that.

We’ll keep doing the winter chores, of course. But I’m glad we also make time to enjoy the snow. The kids are giving us a pretty good reason to.
