Memorial Day Is for Remembering

Sunlit cloud patterns over a dark line of evergreens

Memorial Day often arrives just as the North Country is beginning to look like spring might finally be serious. The garden starts demanding attention. The days get longer. Families gather for the first big weekends outside.

All of that is good. But I also want to make space for what the day is actually for.

Memorial Day honors members of the United States military who died in service to our country. It’s different from Veterans Day, which recognizes all who served. In our family, with military service woven into our story, that distinction is important.

Remembering without turning the day into a sales pitch

Legacy Acres is a woman- and veteran-owned business. We’re proud of that, and grateful to be part of a community that understands service in many forms. But Memorial Day isn’t about promoting the farm or selling another product.

It’s about people and families, and about lives that didn’t get to continue into the ordinary moments the rest of us sometimes take for granted.

So wherever the weekend finds you—at a remembrance ceremony, around a family table, working in the garden, or enjoying the outdoors—I hope you’ll take a moment to remember the reason behind the holiday.

Talk with the kids about it, in a way that’s appropriate for their ages. Learn a name or a story. Acknowledge the sacrifice without treating it as an abstraction.

We’re looking ahead to another growing season at Legacy Acres, with plenty of work and plenty to be grateful for. Remembering the people who made that ordinary freedom possible is a worthwhile way to begin it.
